FUNDRAISING GOLF DAYS
M’DALA TRUST FUNDRAISING GOLF DAY : 4 NOVEMBER 2016
The 2016 Fundraising Golf Day, which was held at Westlake Golf Club on Friday 4 November, was another happy and enjoyable event – our eleventh fundraising golf day and our fourth at Westlake Golf Club. The full field of 144 players got underway with a shotgun start at 12h00 in nearly perfect weather conditions without any rain interference which had been threatening.
The Westlake Golf Club, who is again congratulated on the superb condition of the course and especially the greens, made every effort to ensure the success of the day. The whole experience with the Westlake Golf Club was again a complete pleasure and we enjoyed maximum co-operation, willing assistance and good catering arrangements.
The competition was a four ball alliance (Stableford scoring) with the two best scores to count. Prizes were again awarded to the first ten places – the first prize being R1,000 gift vouchers generously donated by Peter Winhall of Winhall & De Stadler (Blue Route Centre). Further donations to the prize table were received from Iain Hooper of Edward Snell, Hector McBeth of Glynbrynith Whisky and Walter Hart. We express our appreciation to all these donors.

Fundraising Raffle and Auction
Our other fundraising initiatives were the raffle and the auction and both were well supported. All 10,000 raffle tickets were sold but embarrassingly many of the golfers, predominantly those who had not bought raffle tickets before the event, were disappointed that tickets were sold out before the game started. Next year there will be a ‘reserve’ of raffle tickets to provide for any frantic buying on golf day! Prize winners enjoyed the twenty one prizes that were worth a tad over R72,500.
The auction had three Larry Norton wild animal giclee’s (prints on canvas), a personally signed and framed print of Flt Lt Ian Smith’s Spitfire raiding over the Po Valley during WW11, a mint condition copy of Beryl Salt’s Flight of Eagles book, A Rhodesian Army Scroll signed by Mr Smith and the commanders of Comops and the Rhodesian Air Force, four Larry Norton wild animal pencil sketches, a mint condition book titled ‘The Urban Evolution of Harare’, a mint copy of Ron Reid-Daly’s Pamwe Chete book, a mint copy of the new Selous Scouts book, an oil painting donated by Ant Grace and three sets of complimentary golf club playing vouchers. Mike Heath and Simon Gilbert donated a framed tribute to Henrik Stenson, who, as golfers will know, won the World Golf Championship back to back, one with a record score of -24.
An on-course raffle was arranged by Konrad Laker of Gold Travel – golfers participated simply by providing a printed business card on the 10th tee and the three lucky winners were drawn during prize giving. First prize of R5,000 towards any Emirates flight worldwide was won by Michael Koster, second prize of one night’s accommodation at any Protea Hotel in South Africa was won by Peter Mercer and third prize of a dinner for two at the Lagoon Beach Hotel main restaurant – The Brasserie in Milnerton - was won by Greg Todd. Special thanks go to Konrad for this valuable and attractive feature. Supporters of the M’dala Trust will be interested to know that Konrad is the registered Accounts Examiner for the M’dala Trust which he has now done pro bono for eleven years. Great to have your generous support Konrad.
2017 Fundraising Golf Day. The golf day next year will be held at Westlake Golf Club on Friday 3 November, the format being generally the same as we had this year. Entry fees are not yet determined, but first notices will be sent to all those on our possible players list at the end of March confirming details and stating the entry fee. However, it is suggested that those who are keen to play again make a note of the date so that they are not disappointed – it is significant that the field this year was completely booked twelve weeks before the event, such is the popularity of this event.
